please do not ask me really anything about this bthecause i will so blush and stammer and sigh. i understand now why the students were so hot on having me return for graduation...they gave me an award. this means so much to me because it has been the students who have really made my time here in ann arbor. i am so deeply touched by this gesture. one of the students whom i so dearly respect offered these words of recognition: "each year, the graduating M.U.P. students choose to present an award to one professor who has had a significant impact on the class. "this year's awardee has been an inspiration to us in both our academic and non-academic lives. through classroom lectures, personal advice, and by example, this professor has challenged us to work toward to social justice, and to consider our words carefully. "whether hosting an ann arbor "sketch crawl," leading a gallery walk at the art museum or organizing a month of "urban haiku," this person has encouraged our creative spirit and reminded us that life is fun!" how humbling? i really hope that typing this is not too braggy braggy. but this really means a lot to me because i so love teaching. and i am tickled that emily wrote this about word choices...you really can't possibly know how i hound them about the power that words convey.
thanks too for all my pals who challenge me, who encourage my creative spirit and who remind me that life is indeed fun. you help keep me grounded so that i can actually excel. thanks. i wish that we could all be sitting on the back deck here tapping the keg of beer that's out there celebrating and savoring our friendship, and watching our new bright green grass grow.

Kelly! I'm so happy your students recognized your passion for teaching. Congrats. And I don't think it was braggy braggy at all!
that's the best q.
i hate to be cynical, but i think that teaching honors that come from the university or the college or the department are pretty empty: it usually means you made some non-student happy with this or that. but teaching honors from the students, well, like your wise mom said, that's like the people's choice.
i fancy myself a good teacher. and a lot of what i do, do right, i learned from you.
congrats q. the next time i see you, whereever that may be, dinner on me.
