i will hang my head, i will hang my head low

I heard from the chairperson of the search at Miami today that they have offered the position I applied for to someone else who accepted. However, evidently she and the Dean of Fine Arts, approached the Provost to see whether they could have funding for a line for me. Peggy, the chairperson, had hoped to have an answer before their break but it looks like the Provost won't now let them know until after they return from break on January 8. I am so tapped out from this term I have little sense of what this means.

Still no word on St. Louis University.

I may have miscalculated in not going to American Historical Association over the first weekend in January.

dang.

i hope you'll hear from SLU in early 2007 - when the faculty come back and reassemble.

q, what the search chair and dean asked the provost for is extremely uncommon. usually, i think, the department wants to convince the dean that candidate x is perfect so dean will say yes. but in this case, it appears that they said a) candidate x is ideal and b) candidate y is also ideal, so ideal in fact that we think the higher ups should spend their time considering a second hire.

which means i'm hopeful. and i'm sending some good mojo the provost's way. but i also hope you know that it sounds like the department really wants you and respects what you bring to the table.

yo: get some rest. finish all class stuff and then take DAYS to rest and relax. take a week. then look over your materials again and see which remaining jobs you want to apply to.

hang in there q and definately enjoy the holidays.
