an update
so, it's a week later. i made the rounds of various futons and pullout beds with sinead and nico and mike and barb. and squeezed in time at the beach with my family as planned for the annual quinns in ocean city.
i have more edits to enter for chapter five -- because i print it out and then make changes -- just like you like david. but, it's there. i walk around with sheefs of paper and a pen furtively X'ing out things and inserting carrots and phrases here there and everywhere.
but's in concept and almost in .doc form five is there. finally.
three: what's it about -- this is the central problem i have with this chapter. david, you queried is it lit review? theory? or history? seriously: there is no "theory" here. and any lit review is buried in the footnotes. mary is copacetic with this and this is how it will be. chapter three wants to be a bridging chapter. but i need to strip out all extraneous digressions that don't support the larger argument about everyday urbanism.
off to strip right now.
and then to pick up shelley who is coming for a visit. and can i just type: i am so thrilled to welcome her. i am so excited that jasminebooradley and i might drive together to pick her up at the airport.
mary and i have been in touch and she is having surgery later this month. so i need every single reader who believes in god or gods to light candles and will her well.

Enjoyed the beach time with you (and Sinead... and Nico... and Hooters) although my forehead is beginning to peel. Nothing like this though. Glad you are safe and sound and on the ground. Good luck with your continuing edits.
good to hear you landed safely.
q: what is chapter three about?
Continued good wishes as you continue to write!
You know, the blawg-o-sphere is abuzz with the news that Elton John will be a special surprise guest at KQLB. (Some say he is rewriting "Candle in the Wind" to commemorate the end-of-the-dissertation! What an honor!)
Potentially useful thought on Mystery Chapter 3: What is it about? If you have an answer to this question, excellent. But, if you do not, do not fear: One way to jettison neuroses about the chapter is to answer "what is it about?" question by saying "It is about 40 pages" (or whatever page length it is).
This gives you permission simply to forge ahead and craft this chapter around the notion that it only has to start, have a middle, and end. And it allows you to bracket any 'big picture' angst you might have about the chapter's 'larger purpose.'
In short, meta-concerns about the chapter can potentially be addressed later, as you turn this into a fantastic book.
Looking forward to purchasing you-and-julia designed rust-colored courduroy products. (Stacey and Clinton will give you both a big "Shut up!")
i agree w/ jss: sometimes the main goal is to generate pages. the conceptual questions can be put on hold. anyway, i'm sure you do know what it's about somewhere in your gut, aka the second brain. (i like to invert this equation and call my brain "my second gut." that second gut is craving some spiral-sliced ham right about now.)
and i heard that nicole k., pregnant belly and all, would be making a special appearance at the KQLB. i have been making her a rust-colored courduroy baby sling.
