green beer day

today marked my first green beer day at miami. i didn't have to teach today -- it's an off day for me. so i avoided town for most of the morning. students in various green tee shirts, some emblazoned with clever phrases, most with knock-off logos, take the town at 5:30 a.m. when it is legal for establishments to begin selling beer. they troll the streets in the hopes of imbibing as much green beer, scarfing plates of green eggs and ham, and blacking-out and blowing green bits all by the time classes begin. evidently, students go to class drunk. it's the penultimate day of classes before spring break and the weekend before st. pat's.

it was also a really really beautiful day -- with nearly all of last weekend's blizzard melting away. it was circa 60 degrees today.

i met a psychologist and geographer for an iced tea shortly after lunch to chat about whether we could co-teach a class devoted to "the wire". it remains unclear given each of our teaching responsibilities, but just maybe it could work in 09-10.

as i walked around downtown today, from the christian cafe to the art supply store, i edited out all the green youth from my view shed. i concentrated on how charming the place can be,

i sorted out my wireless router -- finally -- all on my own. no geek squad, no nothing. i came home in the early afternoon with a bag full of grading and proceeded to work on my paper sculpture. i am ripping off an eddie bisese idea and making a big figure for my loft.

i had a really pretty good idea about how to reframe my manuscript. i am writing a biography of langston terrace.

donna arrives tomorrow night for a visit. i am excited to have her in town, to pal around. and maybe we will even get to play scrabble in person and not just online.

You have to love Oxford. You can walk to all the bars, and drinding all day to selebrate one's 'Irish heritage' can't bee all bad. There aren't many college towns left that are as accomidating to student inebriation.
